Study : ERDF



ERDF faces a strong problem in managing roadworks. Indeed, working on sidewalks and roads, operating on various cables, re-closing roads and rebuilding sidewalks again: all this costs money. Moreover, many operators are also working on these underground cables (Orange, gas operators, cities, ... ) and the management of roadworks is not optimized.

The problem : How to successfully visualize requests for starting roadworks between different operators to share costs coming from these operations ?



Internal processes audit:

In collaboration with the ERDF Data Manager and the Innovation Manager, we have built the database corresponding to roadworks data using a specialized software. Once the database was made, we have worked on the reliability in order to make data industrializable for using them on a map. The cartography had to be editable to allow ERDF teams to note and edit all the roadworks.


Data collection:

The collection and exploitation of data are done in the following formats :

Delivery in Excel, shapefile, kml : these files are standard and allow to be used on most of the technological tools.

GeoJSON : It describes data as point, line, string, polygon, as well as sets and subsets of these character data and to add information attributes that are not spatial.



the co-design is part of our work methodology in data visualization. ERDF has coordinated all people who could bring value to the project as well as future users of the interface in order to exchange with our designer on the way of approaching the project in terms of ergonomics as standard to respect the habits of internal users. The design is made by iteration of proof of concept on the design part as well as on the technical development of the tool.

The problem of cartografies is often linked with that one of technology or the property of data. Indeed, many map providers are now accessible quickly, such as Google Map, MapBox or OpenStreetMap. 10h11 has chosen to partner with MapBox on all its mapping tools. Through a business account, we have guaranteed to ERDF a standard map with all the addresses and professional cadastres available and an optimized data management capacity. The execution speed of the map is also optimized at the same time by the associated computer development, but also by the power of the virtual machine, which manages the whole interface. Loading speed, zooming, and customizable display on the interface allow ERDF to find their geographical papers on an easily editable map.


The gain for ERDF is twofold. First the company saves time. They can visualize data and roadworks' records on a cartografy while editing or modifying the information, without changing tools or interface. Furthermore ERDF saves money. The tool facilitates the consultation, ERDF can set up a more transparent and intelligent consultation based on the data of operators which wish as well to perform some work.


10h11 has implemented a map which, by a simple research, allows to visualize streets and detailed cadastre of the city. In addition, we have included the option to edit the map via a satellite view, allowing ERDF to lead works in according with the sidewalk and directly measure the m2 necessary to work on the road. Time savings and accuracy as a complement to the budgeting.
